New Music Tuesday’s: She & Him

So twice now I have typed out a blog reviewing She & Him only to have Chrome crash on me.  To be fair, it’s not Chrome’s fault.  My computer is four years old and in computer terms is roughly the age Noah was after he left the ark.  You know… right around the time he decided to plant a vineyard and get blitz drunk.  That’s about the equivalent of my computer; belligerently drunk and passed out naked.

Furthermore, I realize it’s not even Tuesday, so I’m late with this review as it is.  I’d love to say I have an excuse, but truth is I didn’t do much yesterday.  I could have been blogging.  Whatever, I’m over it.

Now… like I said, I’ve written two versions of this blog already, and every version always seems to be just a little bit worse.  I think that’s the way things always go though.  When you work hard on something and somehow lose it, the second draft just never seems as good.  Even worse is when you have to do a third draft.  Which is why I feel like I’m ranting more than reviewing at this point.

However… I still need to say something about She & Him.  After all, that it in fact the purpose of this post in the first place.  So I will say this:

Zooey Deschanel seems to be straight out of the late 70’s with a slightly modern twist.  If you combined Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry, you would come up with something similar in sound to Zooey Deschanel.

She & Him originated after M. Ward realized that Zooey was actually singing in the movie Elf and that she had been writing her own music since she was a kid.  The two worked on Volume One via e-mail, reminiscent of the way The Postal Service collaborated on their album back in 2003.

Their music is an eclectic combination of pop, indie, country and folk; exactly what I would expect from the wife of Ben Gibbard, front man of Death Cab for Cutie & The Postal Service, as well as acoustic guitar extraordinaire.

Volume Two dropped on March 23, 2010 and can be purchased on vinyl.  Because everything sounds better on vinyl.
