New Music Tuesday’s: Matt & Kim

I love music.  However, recently I have done a horrible job of discovering new music to listen to.  It seems like my playlists have revolved around the same few bands: Death Cab for Cutie, The Album Leaf, David Crowder Band and Andrew Peterson.  (My wife can attest to this!)

While all of these are great bands, I also love new music.  More importantly I love being able to talk about new bands that few people have heard of.  It probably has something to do with me being a musical elitist.  (Yes, I’m an elitist.  I’ve come to terms with it.  I’m over it.)

So in an attempt to push me out into the world of new music I am going to start writing a blog every Tuesday highlighting a new band that I have come to enjoy.  Some of these will be bands and artists that I have come to know and love over the last few weeks or months, while others might be completely brand new to me that week.  Either way, it will be an adventure.  This week: Matt & Kim.

I initially discovered Matt & Kim in the most unlikely of places, a commercial for Bacardi’s new Mojito.

The song was catchy without being annoying.  I like that.  So of course, I did what anyone one would do.  I looked it up on YouTube.  Upon discovering their name, I took the obvious next step, and looked them up on Wikipedia.

Matt and Kim formed in 2004, having met at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.  Their music, which is classified as dance-punk and indie-rock, is a simple construction of drums, keyboard and vocals.  Yet in their simplicity is an energy that is rarely matched by bands three times their size.

Their songs are short and poppy, in a genuine celebration of all things electronic, easy going and fun.  You can tell when you listen to them that they do not take themselves too seriously, but are simply having fun with their music.  Something many musicians lack in this era.

While they have a following that is primarily New York local and YouTube, they have been growing in popularity over the years.  Songs from their second album, Grand, have been used in various commercials and products ranging from Bacardi and NBC’s Community to NBA Live 10 and The Sims 3.  It can also be purchased on vinyl, which always scores big points with me.
